Ian Hayton

I find it both interesting and somewhat puzzling that I now find myself standing for council. I’ve always had a fundamental distrust of politicians and yet here I am, putting my hand up for exactly that role.

This isn’t something I just woke up one morning and decided to do. In fact, I’m the first to admit that I may not be the “perfect” candidate. But something has to change for our children, our grandchildren, and the future of Waipā. The current direction of the Waipā District Council is simply not good enough.

It’s time for the residents of Waipā to take their local council back. The direction and strategy of the council should be driven by the people of Waipā and their elected representatives not by unelected council employees. Right now, that balance is lost, and that needs to change.

Why did I join Better Waipā? Because real change takes a team, not just one individual. So even if you choose not to vote for me, I urge you vote for the Better Waipā team to enable real, meaningful change.

Like any high-functioning team, we are united on the key issues: roads, rates, supporting core services, and demanding greater transparency from council.

If you want to know more about me personally reach out. I’m always happy to have that conversation.
